What are the rates of stamp duty?

Land or buildings
A transfer of land or buildings is charged on:
(a) non-residential property, at 6% (since 11 October 2017),
(b) residential property, at
(i) 1% on the first €1,000,000 of consideration, and at
(ii) 2% on the remainder.
A transfer for less than full value (for example, a gift) is charged on the market value.
Shares
Stamp duty is payable on a conveyance or transfer of shares at 1%. This applies even if the transfer is made electronically through the CREST system for electronic security trading.
Lease
The duty depends on the term of the lease and the annual rent.
If the annual rent is less than €30,000 and the term is less than 35 years, the lease is exempt.
If the term is between 35 years and 100 years, the duty is 6% of the average annual rent.
If the term is over 100 years, the duty is 12% of the average annual rent.
If the term is indefinite, the duty is 1% of the average annual rent.
